In the 1980 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins took Art Monk 18th overall in the 1st round. In his rookie year with this team, he gained 58 receptions and became a unanimous All-Rookie selection with a Redskins rookie record. He set the record with 106 receptions for a career-best 1,372 yards. This season, he was named team MVP and was selected to his first Pro Bowl.
Monk went on to have three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in the following two seasons, becoming the only Redskins receiver to do it. He also made history by being the first Redskins player to catch 70 or more receptions in three straight seasons. Monk was a member of “The Posse,” a prolific wide receiver trio who became the first group of wide receivers in NFL history to record 1,000-plus yards in a single season in 1989.
