After receiving the scholarship, he was admitted to the University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton. During his time at this college, he was a member of the North Texas Mean Green football team from 1966 to 1968. In his three years of college, he led the team to a 23–15–1 record. He has the honor of being a three-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection. In his senior year at college, he got the honor of being on the 1968 All-America team, first-team honors.
